What was announced

On September 30, 2026, Lomography announced the Joseph Petzval Métamorphose 35 f/1.8 Focus-coupled Bokeh Control Art Lens, a manual-focus full-frame lens for Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon RF[1]. In the US shop it starts at USD 649 and is available for preorder; the estimated shipping date listed there is December 2026[2].

Key specs

The lens has a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/1.8; the aperture can be set steplessly from f/1.8 to f/22. The design has six elements in five groups[1]. Minimum focusing distance is 0.35 m, the filter thread measures 67 mm, and the body is made of anodized aluminum. Focusing is manual only, with a 180° focus throw[2].

Bokeh control

The distinctive feature is a dedicated ring that sets the bokeh character in seven levels. At level 1, the frame edges soften gradually with soap-bubble bokeh in the background. At level 7, the center stays very sharp while a warping effect that pulls the edges outward builds up around it. The bokeh control is coupled to focus, so the focus plane does not shift when you adjust it[1]. According to Lomography, the lens builds on an optimized version of the 1817 single Gauss formula[2].

Video features

For video work, the lens has MOD 0.8 gear rings for follow-focus systems and a built-in ¼-inch lens support[1]. The lens hood has an 80 mm diameter suited to matte boxes. Aperture plates with special shapes can also be dropped in at the rear; according to Lomography, the plates from older Petzval lenses do not fit[2].
