Key specs

The zoom covers 16 to 50 mm with a constant F2.8 aperture. According to Tamron that equals 24 to 75 mm in 35mm terms on Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X, and 25.6 to 80 mm on Canon RF. The design has 14 elements in 10 groups, the aperture has 7 blades and stops down to F16. Minimum focusing distance is 0.15 m (16 mm) to 0.29 m (50 mm), and maximum magnification is 1:4.5 to 1:4.8. The filter thread measures 55 mm. The Sony E version is 79.6 mm long and weighs 305 g, the Nikon Z version measures 81.6 mm and 315 g, the Fujifilm X version 79.9 mm and 305 g, and the Canon RF version 77.6 mm and 305 g[1].

Autofocus and features

Focus is driven by the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. Tamron describes the lens as quiet and emphasizes video and vlogging. The construction is moisture-resistant and the front element has a fluorine coating. New is a front cap with holes for a cord, so it can be tied to the strap or the camera. A petal-shaped hood is included. Sony E and Nikon Z support the Tamron Lens Utility app; the Canon RF version so far supports only firmware updates, and the Fujifilm X version is not compatible[2].

More choice: all Sony E lenses and all Nikon Z lenses.
