Overview
The Canon RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM is a fisheye zoom for Canon RF mount, announced in February 2026. Canon calls it the world's widest angle zoom lens: at 7 mm on a full frame body it produces a circular fisheye image with a 190 degree angle of view, and at 14 mm a diagonal fisheye with 180 degrees. It continues the idea of the EF 8-15mm F4L Fisheye USM.
Optical design
The lens has 16 elements in 11 groups, with five UD elements and two aspherical elements. Coatings are Super Spectra Coating, Air Sphere Coating on the rear surface of three elements, and a fluorine coating on the front element. The aperture is F2.8 at 7 mm and F3.5 at 14 mm and closes to F22 and F29, with 9 blades. Minimum focus distance is 15 cm, giving 0.35x at 14 mm. There is no front filter thread. A drop-in slot at the rear takes the same filters as the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter, and the supplied Clear Drop-in Filter A has to stay in place at all times.
Autofocus and handling
A leadscrew STM drive with position sensors focuses the lens, and Canon states reduced focus breathing of 0.4 percent at the wide end and 1.5 percent at the long end. There is a control ring with click stops and a function button. A zoom limit switch locks the zoom at 7 mm for circular fisheye on full frame, or restricts it to the range from 14 mm to about 8.7 mm, which gives a diagonal fisheye on APS-C bodies. There is no optical stabilization.
Build and size
The lens weighs 476 g and measures 76.5 mm in diameter and 109.4 mm in length. It is dust and weather resistant. The EW-76 hood and the LP1219 case are included. The hood cannot be mounted in reverse and is meant only for settings near 14 mm on full frame.
Where it fits
For RF mount, the EF 8-15mm F4L Fisheye USM was the earlier choice via adapter. If a rectilinear ultra-wide is needed instead, the RF 10-20mm F4 L IS STM and RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM in the database are the alternatives.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 190 degree circular fisheye at 7 mm and diagonal fisheye at 14 mm in one lens
- F2.8 to F3.5, brighter than the EF predecessor according to Canon
- 476 g and weather resistant
- Zoom limit switch for APS-C and full frame use
Cons
- No front filter thread, rear drop-in filter must always stay in place
- No stabilization
- Hood only usable near 14 mm on full frame
- Special-purpose lens with strong distortion by design
Verdict
The RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM is a native RF fisheye zoom for creative, VR and astro work, with a very wide field of view and a compact body. It is a specialist tool, best for those who deliberately want the fisheye look.
