Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm F4G ED VR vs Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
Nikon F-Mount
Both zooms cover the wide-angle range on Nikon F full frame, but they follow different ideas. The AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (2007) is the specialist tool for landscape, architecture and astro: it starts at 14 mm and holds f/2.8 throughout. Its strongly bulging front element leaves no room for screw-in filters.
The AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR (2010) is the more versatile companion. It has built-in image stabilization and a 77 mm filter thread, it reaches 35 mm, and at about 680 g it is much lighter than the 14-24 at 970 g. The price is 2 mm less at the wide end and one stop of light.
