Overview
The Sony FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is a fisheye zoom for full frame Sony E-mount cameras. Sony announced it in September 2026 and calls it its first fisheye zoom G lens. At 8 mm it produces a circular fisheye image with a 180 degree angle of view, and at 14 mm a diagonal fisheye image across the full frame, again with a 180 degree diagonal angle of view according to Sony.
Optical design
The lens has 16 elements in 13 groups. Sony states that ED glass and aspherical elements suppress chromatic and other aberrations and keep resolution high across the zoom range. The aperture is constant at F3.5 and closes down to F22 with 7 circular blades. Minimum focus distance is just 15 cm and the maximum magnification is 0.22x at the long end, which allows dramatic close-ups with strong perspective. The lens has no front thread. Sony lists a filter template in the box, which points to a rear filter solution, but the exact system is not described on the pages used here.
Autofocus and handling
Sony speaks of fast and precise autofocus, Linear Response manual focus and suppressed focus breathing for movie work. The zoom is manual and uses an inner mechanism, so the center of gravity shifts little while zooming. Controls include a focus mode switch, a zoom lock switch and an aperture ring with switchable click stops. The lens has no stabilizer of its own and relies on the camera body. It is not compatible with teleconverters.
Build and size
The lens weighs 314 g, measures 63.1 mm in diameter and 82.8 mm in length and is therefore small for a fisheye zoom. Sony describes a dust and moisture resistant design, not guaranteed to be fully proof, and a fluorine coating on the front element. A petal hood (ALC-SH186) is supplied. Sony also mentions that two lenses on the VENICE Extension System Mini place the optical axes about 64 mm apart, close to the human eye distance, for spatial and VR content.
Where it fits
For fisheye on E-mount, the alternatives in the database are mostly single focal length lenses, such as the Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC Fisheye II, the Venus Laowa 4mm F2.8 Fisheye or the TTArtisan 7.5mm f/2 Fisheye. The Sony is the only listed zoom that covers both circular and diagonal looks in one lens, and it has autofocus, which most of these primes do not.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Circular to diagonal fisheye in one lens
- Constant F3.5 aperture
- Autofocus, aperture ring and zoom lock
- Compact and light at 314 g
Cons
- No front filter thread
- 7 blade diaphragm
- Fisheye perspective suits specific uses only
Verdict
The FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G is an unusual lens that makes fisheye work flexible. It suits landscape, architecture, sports and video users who want both looks without changing lenses.
