Overview

The Canon RF 1200mm F8 L IS USM is a super-telephoto prime for full-frame RF cameras. Canon announced it on 23 February 2022 together with the RF 800mm F5.6 L IS USM. At 1200 mm it targets wildlife, sports and distant-subject work where very long reach matters more than a fast aperture. Canon points out that it is impressively light at 7.4 lb.

Optical design

The lens has 26 elements in 18 groups. Canon lists two fluorite elements, one Super UD element and one UD element. The aperture ranges from f/8 to f/64 with a 9-blade circular diaphragm. Canon names Super Spectra Coating (SSC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) against ghosting and flare. The minimum focus distance is 4.3 m with a maximum magnification of 0.29x.

Autofocus and handling

Autofocus uses a Ring USM drive. Canon quotes up to 4 stops of optical image stabilization with three IS modes. The lens has a customizable electronic focus ring that allows manual focus adjustment during servo AF, and two focus presets that return the lens to memorized focus distances. Canon says the lens is compatible with the RF 1.4x and RF 2x extenders for 1680 mm and 2400 mm.

Build and size

The lens weighs 3340 g, which Canon gives as 7.4 lb, and measures 168 mm in diameter and 537 mm in length. The filter system is a 52 mm drop-in holder, included with a clear protect filter, and it also accepts 52 mm screw-in filters. Canon describes dust- and water-resistant L-series construction and a fluorine coating on the front element.

Where it fits

The RF 800mm F5.6L IS USM is the shorter sibling of the same family, and it weighs 3140 g in our database. The RF 600mm F4L IS USM is faster at f/4 but much shorter at 600 mm. The RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM is a zoom option at 2050 g that covers a much wider range but reaches 800 mm only. The 1200 mm is a specialist tool: the focal length is fixed, and a tripod or monopod is the realistic way to use it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • 1200 mm focal length in a single RF lens
  • Image stabilizer with up to 4 stops and three IS modes
  • Compatible with RF 1.4x and 2x extenders
  • Two focus presets and customizable focus ring
  • Dust and water resistance, fluorine coating
  • 52 mm drop-in filter system

Cons

  • f/8 maximum aperture limits use in low light
  • 3340 g and 537 mm length make it hard to carry and handle
  • Minimum focus distance of 4.3 m
  • Canon describes the Ring USM drive as a low-speed drive

Verdict

The RF 1200mm F8 L IS USM is a niche lens with a unique reach. It makes sense for photographers whose subjects are far away and who work from a support. For everyone else, the RF 100-500mm or 200-800mm zooms are far easier to live with.
