Overview
The Canon RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ is a standard zoom for full frame Canon RF cameras with built-in power zoom. Canon announced it in May 2026 together with the EOS R6 V and describes it as its first L-series lens with power zoom that needs no additional accessories. The lens targets video creators and hybrid shooters who want an ultra-wide start with a constant F4 aperture.
Optical design
The lens has 13 elements in 11 groups, including three UD elements and two aspherical elements. Coatings are Super Spectra Coating, Air Sphere Coating on the inner surface of the front element and a fluorine coating on the front lens. The F4 aperture is constant over the whole range and closes to F22, with 9 blades. Minimum focus distance is 24 cm, giving a maximum magnification of 0.33x at 50 mm. The filter thread is 67 mm. Canon points to optically suppressed focus breathing.
Autofocus and handling
Two Nano USM motors move the zoom and a third Nano USM motor drives focusing. Zooming is internal, so the length does not change, which helps with gimbal balance. A single zoom ring handles both modes: at the numbered 20 to 50 mm area it works as a manual zoom, at the spring-loaded W-T position it controls the power zoom. A PZ/MZ switch releases the ring. The power zoom can also be operated through a Power Zoom lever on compatible cameras, through the Canon Camera Connect app or through Bluetooth remotes such as the BR-E2 and BR-E1. Further controls are a control ring with 57 clicks per revolution, a function button and an AF/MF switch. There is no iris ring.
Optical stabilization
The built-in stabilizer gives up to 6.0 stops on its own according to Canon, and up to 8.0 stops when combined with in-body stabilization in coordinated mode.
Build and size
The lens weighs 420 g and measures 79.9 mm in diameter and 98.4 mm in length. It is dust and weather resistant and ships with the EW-73H hood and the LP1219 case.
Where it fits
Nearby RF lenses in the database include the RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM, which starts wider, and the RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM, which reaches further. The 20-50 trades range for the ultra-wide start, power zoom and low weight. Sony's FE 20-70mm F4 G is a comparable idea in another system.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Constant F4 with a 20 mm start
- Built-in power zoom controlled from one ring, with remote options
- 420 g, internal zoom, weather resistant
- Stabilization of up to 8.0 stops in coordinated mode (Canon figure)
Cons
- Shorter range than 24-105 or 24-70 zooms
- F4 is less bright than F2.8 standard zooms
- No iris ring
- Extenders not compatible
Verdict
The RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ is a compact L-series standard zoom built around video and gimbal use. It suits creators who value power zoom and low weight over a long focal range or a brighter aperture.
