Overview
The Canon RF 20mm F1.4 L VCM is a fast ultra-wide prime for Canon RF mount. Canon announced it in March 2025 as the fourth lens of its RF Hybrid Prime series, designed for people who switch between stills and video. It covers the full frame format with a 94 degree diagonal angle of view and can also be used on APS-C bodies, where it corresponds to about 32 mm.
Optical design
The lens has 15 elements in 11 groups, including one Super UD element, two UD elements, one BR (Blue Refractive) optics element and two aspherical elements. Canon says the UD, Super UD and BR elements strongly reduce the color fringing that large aperture lenses tend to show. Coatings are Super Spectra Coating, Subwavelength Structure Coating, Air Sphere Coating and a fluorine coating on the front element. The aperture of F1.4 to F16 is formed by 11 blades. Minimum focus distance is 20 cm with a maximum magnification of 0.19x. The filter thread is 67 mm.
Autofocus and handling
A VCM (voice coil motor) drives focusing. Canon describes the autofocus as quiet, fast and precise and points to dramatically reduced focus breathing compared with lenses without VCM. Controls include a control ring with click stops, an iris ring, a lens function button and an AF/MF switch. According to Canon's specifications the iris ring works for stills on the EOS R1, R5 Mark II and later bodies. There is no optical stabilization, so stabilization comes from the camera body. A removable rear holder accepts user-cut gel or polyester filters.
Build and size
The lens weighs 519 g, measures 76.5 mm in diameter and 99.3 mm in length, and has a dust and weather resistant construction. The EW-73H hood, lens cap, dust cap and the LP1219 case are bundled. Extension tubes and extenders are not compatible.
Where it fits
It shares its design language with the other F1.4 L VCM primes in the database: the RF 24mm F1.4 L VCM, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. For zoom coverage at this width, the RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM offers stabilization and a wider range but a slower aperture, and the RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM is brighter than the zoom but not as fast as F1.4.
Pros and cons
Pros
- F1.4 aperture at 20 mm with 11 blades
- 519 g, compact for its speed class
- Iris ring and control ring for video
- Weather resistant, rear gel filter holder
Cons
- No optical stabilization
- Maximum magnification of only 0.19x
- 519 g and 99.3 mm length, noticeable on small bodies
- L-series positioning, so a high price class
Verdict
The RF 20mm F1.4 L VCM suits hybrid shooters who want an ultra-wide prime with a very bright aperture and video-friendly controls. Landscape and astro photographers get a large aperture, while those who prefer zoom flexibility or stabilization may be better served by a stabilized wide zoom.
