Predecessor: Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D

Overview

The Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Lite Zero-D FF is a rectilinear ultra wide prime for full frame mirrorless cameras with a 122 degree angle of view. Announced in June 2025, it is a lighter evolution of the earlier Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D, and it is offered for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF and Leica L. It is aimed at architecture, real estate, landscape and travel shooters who want very little distortion in a compact package.

Optical design

The lens has 16 elements in 9 groups. According to CineD, the formula includes 2 aspherical and 4 ED elements, and Laowa says the Zero-D design keeps distortion close to zero so that straight lines stay straight without correction in post. The aperture runs from f/2.8 to f/22. Laowa offers a 5 blade version, which makes a ten point sunstar, and a 14 blade version for rounder out of focus highlights, depending on the mount. The minimum focus distance is 14 cm with a maximum magnification of about 0.2x.

Autofocus and handling

Autofocus is available on the Sony E and Nikon Z versions with the 5 blade aperture, and Laowa calls it the second autofocus lens in its lineup. The Canon RF and Leica L versions are fully manual, and the 14 blade version is manual focus on every mount. Laowa adds that a faint operational sound may be audible during focusing when the aperture is stopped down, which it describes as normal. A 72 mm filter thread sits at the front, so screw in filters work without a special holder.

Build and size

Weights depend on the mount: 377 g for the autofocus Sony E version, 390 g for autofocus Nikon Z, 480 g for the manual Canon RF version and 475 g for Leica L. Laowa gives a size of 77 mm in diameter and 76.5 mm in length on its product page, while CineD quotes 74.8 mm by 84.6 mm, so the exact dimensions probably differ per mount.

Where it fits

The Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D is the predecessor, and the database lists it for six mounts. At the very wide end, the Venus Laowa 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF goes wider, while the Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art and the Sony FE 14mm F1.8 GM trade some angle for a much faster aperture.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • 122 degree angle of view with a Zero-D design that targets minimal distortion
  • Autofocus on Sony E and Nikon Z
  • 377 g on Sony E, light for a full frame 12 mm
  • 72 mm filter thread
  • Choice between 5 and 14 aperture blades on selected mounts

Cons

  • Manual focus only on Canon RF and Leica L
  • Focus operation can produce a faint noise when stopped down, according to Laowa
  • Dimensions differ between the product page and press reports
  • f/2.8 is not fast for astrophotography compared with f/1.8 alternatives
  • Weights climb to about 480 g on the manual mounts

Verdict

The Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Lite Zero-D FF is a practical ultra wide for anyone who wants a rectilinear 12 mm with a filter thread and, on Sony E and Nikon Z, autofocus. The choice of aperture blade count and the mount specific weights make it worth checking the exact version before buying.
