Overview
The Fujifilm XF 23mm F2.8 R WR is a very small wide-angle prime for the Fujifilm X mount. Fujifilm introduced it in June 2025. On APS-C X-mount cameras, the 23 mm focal length gives a field of view equivalent to 35 mm on full frame, which Fujifilm describes as the natural view of the first X Series camera. It is designed for everyday photography, street and travel scenes, and it is one of the lightest lenses in the system at 90 g.
Optical design
Fujifilm lists 8 elements in 6 groups, including two aspherical elements. The aperture ranges from f/2.8 to f/16, and the diaphragm has 11 rounded blades, which Fujifilm says gives rounded bokeh. Maximum magnification is 0.15x.
Autofocus and handling
The lens uses a DC motor for autofocus, which Fujifilm describes as consistent and fast. It has a mechanical aperture ring, and a thin space between the aperture ring and the focus ring is meant to make adjusting either one easier while looking through the viewfinder. The minimum focus distance is 0.2 m, measured from the focal plane. There is no optical stabilizer in the lens.
Build and size
The lens weighs 90 g and measures 61.8 mm in diameter and 23 mm in length from the mount flange. The filter thread is 39 mm. Fujifilm describes a weather-resistant (WR) design that handles moisture and temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. A lens hood is included.
Where it fits
The Fujifilm XF 23mm F2 R WR in our database is brighter at f/2 but weighs 180 g, takes 43 mm filters, and has 10 elements in 6 groups. The XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR is the faster and larger option. The XF 27mm F2.8 R WR (84 g, 39 mm filter) and the XF 16mm F2.8 R WR (155 g) are the other compact WR primes in the lineup. The new lens competes closely with the 27mm in size but offers a wider angle.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 90 g and only 23 mm long
- Weather-resistant design down to -10 degrees Celsius
- Aperture ring and 11 rounded blades
- 0.2 m minimum focus distance
- Lens hood included
Cons
- f/2.8 is slower than the XF 23mm F2 R WR and the F1.4 versions
- No optical stabilizer
- 0.15x maximum magnification
Verdict
The XF 23mm F2.8 R WR targets those who want a 35 mm equivalent in the smallest possible package. It trades one stop of aperture for a lens that is half the weight of the F2 version. If low light or shallow depth of field matter more, the F2 or F1.4 versions are the alternatives.
