Overview
The Sirui Sniper 75mm F1.2 is an autofocus telephoto prime for APS-C mirrorless cameras with Sony E, Fujifilm X or Nikon Z mount. Sirui states that it corresponds to roughly a 113mm lens on full frame, which makes it a portrait and close-up lens with strong subject separation. It is the longest lens of the Sniper series, which also includes the 16mm, 23mm, 33mm and 56mm.
Optical design
Sirui lists 13 elements in 9 groups, including 4 high refractive index elements. According to Sirui's comparison table the lens has no ED or aspherical elements. The aperture covers F1.2 to F16 and uses 15 blades. The minimum focus distance is 0.7 m, which is typical for a lens of this focal length but not a close-up lens. The image circle covers APS-C only.
Autofocus and handling
An STM stepping motor drives the focusing. Sirui states that it supports eye AF and object tracking. The focus ring has a throw of 360 degrees, a USB-C port is used for firmware updates and electronic contacts pass lens data to the camera. A round lens hood is supplied, in contrast to the petal-shaped hood of the 16mm.
Build and size
Like the other Sniper lenses it combines carbon fiber, aluminum alloy and a ceramic coating according to Sirui. The filter thread is 67 mm, larger than the 58 mm used by the shorter lenses of the series. Sirui lists 466 g for both the E and X mount versions, with lengths of 94 and 93.8 mm. Dustin Abbott notes that the Sniper lenses are not weather resistant and measured the 75mm at close to 75 mm in diameter.
Where it fits
For portraits on APS-C, the Viltrox AF 75mm F1.2 Pro offers the same focal length and aperture. A shorter option with a view like 85mm on full frame is the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary, and Fujifilm X users can also consider the Fujifilm XF 56mm F1.2 R WR. Wider lenses from the same line are the Sniper 16mm F1.2 and the 23mm, 33mm and 56mm models.
Pros and cons
Pros
- F1.2 aperture at a roughly 113mm equivalent view
