Voigtländer Color-Skopar 18mm f/2.8 Aspherical

The Voigtländer Color-Skopar 18mm f/2.8 Aspherical is a manual focus pancake wide-angle lens made only for Fujifilm X. On the APS-C sensors of the X system it gives the field of view of a 28 mm lens on full frame, according to Cosina. It suits photographers who want a very small and light lens for street, travel and tabletop work and who are happy to focus by hand. Cosina announced it in January 2024, and sales started in February 2024.

Optical design

The optics consist of 7 elements in 5 groups. Cosina designed the lens exclusively for the X mount and says the optical formula is tuned to the X-series sensors, so distortion, light falloff and colour casts at the edges are kept down without relying on the camera's in-body correction. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 was chosen to keep the lens compact. The diaphragm has 10 blades and stops down to f/22.

Autofocus and handling

There is no autofocus. Focusing is manual through an all-metal helicoid, and the focus ring carries a small lever. Cosina says the lever position gives a rough idea of the focus distance without looking at the scale. The aperture ring is mechanical and clicks in third stops. The lens has electronic contacts: on supported bodies and firmware versions it passes Exif data, focus check and distance information to the camera, and on bodies with in-body stabilisation it can feed the stabiliser. On cameras that do not communicate with the lens, the setting "Release without lens" must be set to permitted. The minimum focus distance is 17 cm at a maximum magnification of 1:6.6, which Cosina recommends for tabletop shots.

Build and size

The lens is only 23.5 mm long from the mount surface and weighs 115 g. The filter thread is 43 mm and the maximum diameter is 59.3 mm. A screw-in lens hood is included.

Where it fits

Within Fujifilm X, the closest alternative in size and weight is the Fujifilm XF 18mm F2 R (116 g), which adds autofocus. Other small wide-angles in the database are the Fujifilm XF 16mm F2.8 R WR and the Fujifilm XF 23mm F2.8 R WR. Faster manual options include the Voigtländer Nokton 23mm f/1.2. The Color-Skopar trades autofocus and speed for size and a direct mechanical feel.
