Overview
The Panasonic Lumix S 40mm F2 is a compact standard prime for L-Mount cameras with a full frame sensor. Panasonic announced it in April 2026, with shipping expected from early June 2026. It is meant for travel, street and everyday photography where a small, light and bright lens is wanted.
Optical design
The lens has 7 elements in 6 groups, three of which are aspherical. The diaphragm has 7 blades and forms a circular opening, closing down to f/22. The diagonal angle of view is 57 degrees. The front element has a fluorine coating that Panasonic says makes it easier to remove dirt and oil.
Autofocus and handling
Autofocus is driven by a stepper motor. Panasonic says the design suppresses focus breathing for video. There is a control ring, which can also act as the focus ring, and a function button on the barrel. The minimum focus distance is 0.30 m with a maximum magnification of 0.17x. Panasonic lists no stabilizer in the lens, so stabilization depends on the camera body.
Build and size
At about 144 g, 69.4 mm in diameter and 40.9 mm in length, it is a very small L-Mount lens. The filter thread is 62 mm. Panasonic lists a dust-resistant, splash-resistant and freeze-resistant design, with operation rated down to -10 degrees Celsius. Both caps are supplied.
Where it fits
Among the L-Mount primes in our database, nearby options are the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm F1.8, the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm F1.8 and the Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN. The Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a more compact alternative with a slower aperture. The Panasonic Lumix S 20mm F2.5 is a sibling with the same length and filter size.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very light at about 144 g and only 40.9 mm long

- Dust, splash and freeze resistance, according to Panasonic
- Control ring and function button
- Focus breathing suppression for video
Cons
- No lens stabilizer
- Maximum magnification of 0.17x
- Only 7 diaphragm blades
Verdict
A small, bright 40 mm for L-Mount users who want to carry a lens that hardly changes the size of the camera. It is a lens for daily use more than for specialized work.
