Overview
The OM System M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III is a compact standard zoom kit lens for Micro Four Thirds. OM System announced it in September 2026 alongside the new OM System PEN camera. On the 2x crop of Micro Four Thirds, the focal range corresponds to 28-84mm in full-frame terms, which covers wide-angle to short telephoto for everyday photography, travel and street scenes. It should not be confused with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ, the electronic-zoom pancake.
Optical design
The lens has 8 elements in 7 groups, including 3 aspherical elements. The aperture runs from F3.5 at 14mm to F5.6 at 42mm with a smallest aperture of F22, and the diaphragm has 7 blades.
Autofocus and handling
The lens uses the MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) mechanism for autofocus, which OM System describes as fast and nearly silent. The minimum focus distance is 13 cm, with a maximum magnification of 0.26x at 14mm, which is 0.53x in 35mm terms. The predecessor focused down to 25 cm with 0.19x. The lens supports in-camera focus stacking. It does not support the MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters and does not work with 5-axis Sync IS, and it has no stabilizer of its own.
Build and size
The lens weighs 125 g, is 50.5 mm long with a diameter of 60.0 mm, and takes 46 mm filters. The main change from the previous version is the construction: the lens now has IPX1-rated splash protection and a dustproof design, according to OM System. The M.Zuiko 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ pancake weighs 93 g and is not weather-sealed.
Where it fits
The predecessor is the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 II R. The II R has the same 8/7 construction and weighs 112 g, and the II version focused only down to 25 cm. Within the system, the EZ pancake is the smaller option, and the OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm F4 Pro or the 12-100mm F4.0 IS Pro are the step up if a faster or more versatile zoom is wanted. Panasonic offers its own 14-42mm kit zooms for the same mount.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Light at 125 g
- IPX1 splash protection and dustproof design
- Close focusing to 13 cm with focus stacking support
- Quiet MSC autofocus
- 46 mm filter size
Cons
- Slow F5.6 maximum aperture at 42mm
- No built-in stabilizer and no Sync IS support
- No teleconverter support
- Not as compact as the EZ pancake zoom
Verdict
The 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III is a modest update that adds weather protection and closer focusing to the classic Micro Four Thirds kit zoom. It remains a small and light standard zoom for travel and everyday use, particularly as part of a PEN kit. Photographers who need more speed or range will want one of the Pro zooms instead.
