Overview

The OM System M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 II is a compact standard prime for Micro Four Thirds cameras. OM System announced it in February 2025 together with the OM-3 camera, as an updated version of the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8. The 25 mm focal length equals 50 mm on full frame, so the lens covers the classic normal angle of view for portraits, street and everyday work.

Optical design

The lens has 9 elements in 7 groups, including two aspherical elements. The optical formula is unchanged from the first version. The diaphragm has 7 blades and forms a circular opening, closing down to f/22. The angle of view is 47 degrees.

Autofocus and handling

Autofocus uses OM System's High-Speed Imager AF with an MSC mechanism. The minimum focus distance is 0.25 m with a maximum magnification of 0.12x, equal to 0.24x in full frame terms. There is no lens stabilizer and no manual focus clutch. Stabilization comes from the camera body.

Build and size

At 156 g, 59.4 mm in diameter and 42 mm in length, the lens is heavier than the first version at 136 g. The extra weight comes with updated weather sealing rated IPX1 (splash-proof, dust-proof and freezeproof). The filter thread is 46 mm.

Where it fits

The predecessor is the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8. For more speed and a larger lens there is the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm F1.2 Pro. Panasonic offers the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm F1.7 ASPH and the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 II ASPH as alternatives on the same mount. The companion lens in this update is the OM System M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 II.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Weather sealing to IPX1, according to OM System
  • Compact and light at 156 g
  • f/1.8 aperture with 7 circular blades
  • Standard 50 mm equivalent angle of view
  • Fast MSC autofocus

Cons

  • 20 g heavier than the first version
  • No lens stabilizer
  • Maximum magnification of 0.12x
  • Slower than the f/1.7 and f/1.4 alternatives from Panasonic

Verdict

A small normal prime for Micro Four Thirds that gains weather protection over the first version. It is an update for those who want the same optics with better sealing, and a light option for those who start with the system.
