Overview
The Nikon Nikkor Z DX MC 35mm F1.7 is a standard macro prime for Nikon Z mount cameras with an APS-C (DX) sensor. Nikon announced it in October 2025. At 35 mm it gives an angle of view equal to about 52.5 mm on full frame, and Nikon calls it the first DX Nikkor Z lens with a life-size equivalent maximum reproduction ratio.
Optical design
The lens has 8 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical ED element, which Nikon says reduces chromatic aberration. The diaphragm has 9 rounded blades. At infinity the aperture range is f/1.7 to f/16. At the closest focus distance of 0.16 m Nikon lists f/3.2 to f/22.
Autofocus and handling
A stepping motor (STM) drives autofocus, which Nikon describes as quiet, and an internal focusing system keeps the total length fixed. For video, the design suppresses focus breathing, although Nikon notes it can still be noticeable depending on the subject distance. The control ring can be assigned focus mode (M/A), aperture, exposure compensation or ISO. The maximum reproduction ratio is 0.67x on DX, which Nikon states is equal to life size in full frame terms. The working distance at the closest setting is about 7 cm from the lens end, without the hood.
Build and size
The lens weighs about 220 g, measures about 70 mm in diameter and 72 mm in length from the mount flange, and takes 52 mm filters. Nikon says it was designed with dust and drip resistance in mind, without guaranteeing it in all situations. There is no lens stabilizer.
Where it fits
For macro work on Z mount we also list the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 50mm F2.8 and the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm F2.8 VR S. Both are full frame lenses with a narrower maximum aperture of f/2.8, while the DX 35 mm is the brighter option for DX bodies and reaches 0.67x. Among everyday DX primes, the Nikon Nikkor Z DX 24mm F1.7 is the other f/1.7 option.
Pros and cons
Pros
- f/1.7 aperture in a compact 220 g body
- Close focus from 0.16 m with 0.67x magnification
- Aspherical ED element and internal focusing
- Standard angle of view, suitable beyond macro work
- 52 mm filter thread
Cons
- No lens stabilizer
- Maximum reproduction ratio of 0.67x on the DX sensor
- Focus breathing can still be noticeable at some distances, as Nikon notes
- Effective aperture drops to f/3.2 at the closest distance
Verdict
A small, fast everyday prime that also works for close-ups. It suits DX shooters who want tabletop, flower and product shots without a larger macro lens.
