Overview
The TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 is a pancake-style autofocus prime for APS-C mirrorless cameras, sold for Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X. On APS-C the 27 mm focal length gives a field of view similar to about 40 mm on full frame. According to the store listing the Fujifilm X version appeared first, in autumn 2022, with the E and Z versions following.
Optical design
TTArtisan specifies 6 elements in 5 groups. The aperture range is f/2.8 to f/16 with 7 diaphragm blades according to the manufacturer, while B&H lists 8. The angle of view is 56 degrees, the minimum focus distance is 0.35 m and the filter thread is 39 mm. A review by OpticalLimits lists two high-refractive elements.
Autofocus and handling
An STM stepping motor with a leading screw drives the autofocus, and TTArtisan lists support for eye, face and animal detection. The aperture ring has clicks and an A position, and the product page notes that some cameras only allow aperture changes through the ring on lenses with their own ring. A Type-C port for firmware updates is built into the rear lens cap. The product page mentions image stabilization for video, which refers to camera-based stabilization since the lens has no optical stabilizer.
Build and size
The lens is made of 5052 aluminum and comes with a plastic hood. TTArtisan states a weight of about 88 g to 100 g. B&H lists 88 g for the Sony E and Nikon Z versions, and OpticalLimits measured 94 g on the Fujifilm X version with dimensions of 61 mm diameter and 29 mm length. We have no dimensions for the E and Z versions. The Sony E and Fujifilm X versions also appeared in a limited polar white edition.
Where it fits
There is no predecessor in our database. On Fujifilm X the first-party XF 27mm F2.8 weighs 78 g and the XF 27mm F2.8 R WR 84 g, and the AstrHori AF 27mm f/2.8 weighs about 165 g. The TTArtisan is therefore among the lightest autofocus options of this focal length.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Around 88 g to 100 g and only about 29 mm long
- Autofocus with eye, face and animal detection
- Clicked aperture ring and metal body
- Close focus of 0.35 m
- Three APS-C mounts
Cons
- Only f/2.8
- Retail sources disagree on the number of diaphragm blades
- No optical stabilization
- Missing dimension data for E and Z versions
Verdict
The TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 is one of the smallest and lightest autofocus lenses for APS-C. It suits photographers who want a body-cap-sized street lens and accept a modest aperture. First-party lenses on Fujifilm X are lighter still, but the TTArtisan offers the same format across three mounts.
