Overview

The ZEISS Otus ML 1.4/35 is a manual focus 35 mm prime for full frame mirrorless cameras with Sony E, Canon RF or Nikon Z mount. ZEISS announced it on 24 February 2026 as the third member of the Otus ML family, after the 1.4/50 and 1.4/85. According to ZEISS, it is designed for photographers who tell visual stories with deliberate narratives, from street and travel to documentary work.

Optical design

The lens has 15 elements in 11 groups. ZEISS lists a Distagon design, a retrofocus construction, with an aspherical surface and a lens made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. ZEISS says the aspherical design minimizes distortion and chromatic aberration and that the T* coating reduces reflections and flare. The aperture runs from f/1.4 to f/16 with ten blades. The minimum focus distance is 30 cm at an image ratio of 1:5.72. The angle of view is 63 degrees diagonally.

Focusing and handling

There is no autofocus and no image stabilization. The focus ring has a metal body with a helicoid mechanism and a rotation angle of 257 degrees. The aperture ring can be de-clicked, which ZEISS highlights for video. The scales are marked in yellow. ZEISS describes manual focusing as a creative tool that lets photographers place the focus precisely on the centre of the story.

Build and size

The construction is all metal. The lens weighs 698 g in E-mount, 717 g in RF-mount and 737 g in Z-mount. Length without caps is 101 mm for E and RF and 103 mm for Z, and the maximum diameter is 77 mm. The filter thread is M67 x 0.75, the same as on the 1.4/50.

Where it fits

The Otus ML trio is the mirrorless continuation of the Otus line, whose DSLR lenses in our database, such as the Otus 55mm F1.4 at 970 g, are much heavier. For E-mount autofocus rivals include the Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM at 524 g, the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II Art at 525 g and the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA at 630 g. The Voigtländer Nokton 35mm f/1.2 is another manual option, at 387 g for Sony E. On RF and Z there are the Canon RF 35mm F1.4 L VCM at 555 g and the Nikkor Z 35mm F1.4 at 415 g.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fast F1.4 with ten aperture blades
  • All-metal build with a helicoid focus ring
  • De-clickable aperture ring for video

  • Available for E, RF and Z

Cons

  • Manual focus only
  • No image stabilization
  • Heavier than the 35 mm autofocus F1.4 lenses from Sony and Sigma
  • Focus accuracy depends on the photographer

Verdict
