Overview
The 7Artisans AF 24mm f/1.8 is an autofocus wide-angle prime for full frame mirrorless cameras, available for Sony E, Nikon Z and Leica L mount. It combines a 24 mm view with an f/1.8 aperture and is positioned for environmental portraits, street, architecture and night scenes. The brand also markets it for astrophotography.
Optical design
According to 7Artisans the lens has 14 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical, two high-refractive and three ED elements. The aperture range is f/1.8 to f/16 with 11 diaphragm blades, and the angle of view is 83 degrees. The minimum focus distance is 0.32 m. Resolution claims for sensors of 60 megapixels and above come from the manufacturer's marketing material.
Autofocus and handling
An STM motor drives the autofocus, and the lens supports eye detection. 7Artisans describes a stepless aperture ring with an automatic and a manual position, which is aimed at video work. The barrel carries an AF/MF switch and a custom Fn key. A Type-C port is provided for firmware updates, and the company says the lens transmits EXIF information. The lens does not have built-in stabilization.
Build and size
The lens body is metal. For the Sony E version 7Artisans specifies about 424 g without caps, a diameter of 72 mm and a length of 92 mm. The filter thread is 62 mm. We have no manufacturer weights for the Nikon Z and L versions. A lens hood is part of the package.
Where it fits
There is no predecessor in our database. Among autofocus 24 mm f/1.8 lenses the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 FE for Sony E weighs 230 g and the Viltrox AF 24mm F1.8 340 g on Sony E and 370 g on Nikon Z. The Nikkor Z 24mm F1.8 S weighs 450 g, and the Panasonic Lumix S 24mm F1.8 for L mount 310 g. At 424 g the 7Artisans lens is on the heavier side of this group but carries a more elaborate optical formula on paper.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Bright f/1.8 aperture at a wide 24 mm focal length
- Elaborate design with aspherical, high-refractive and ED elements
- Stepless aperture ring plus AF/MF switch and Fn key
- Type-C firmware updates
- Three full frame mounts
Cons
- About 424 g, heavier than several competing 24 mm f/1.8 lenses
- 72 mm diameter and 92 mm length are large for a 24 mm prime
- No stabilization
- No manufacturer weights for Nikon Z and L versions
Verdict
The 7Artisans AF 24mm f/1.8 offers a fast wide-angle option with a modern control set for three full frame mounts. It is bigger and heavier than the smallest competitors, so the decision comes down to whether the optical formula and the controls matter more than size. For travel setups where weight counts, the lighter Samyang and Viltrox lenses deserve a look.
