Overview
The Samyang AF 16mm F2.8 P FE is a compact autofocus ultra-wide prime for Sony E-mount full frame cameras. Samyang announced it on 15 July 2025 together with the AF 85mm F1.8 P FE as part of the Prima Series, and it targets vlogging, travel, landscape and street photography. On APS-C bodies it gives a field of view equivalent to 24 mm, according to Samyang.
Optical design
The lens has 8 elements in 7 groups. The special elements are one aspherical (ASP), one high refractive (HR) and three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, with UMC coating. The aperture runs from F2.8 to F22 with seven blades. The angle of view is 107 degrees on full frame and 84.1 degrees on APS-C. The minimum focus distance is only 12 cm at a magnification of 0.33x. Samyang calls this semi-macro and says it reaches roughly 0.5x on APS-C.
Autofocus and handling
A Linear STM stepping motor handles autofocus. Unlike the AF 35mm F1.4 P FE, this lens has an AF/MF switch, and it has a micro-pattern rubber focus ring. A USB-C port allows firmware updates. Samyang says the lens was tested in-house to an IP5-level standard, meaning limited dust exposure should not affect performance, and it lists weather sealing. There is no optical stabilizer.
Build and size
At 207 g, 70.5 mm in length and 69.8 mm in diameter, it is very small for a full frame 16 mm. The filter thread is 62 mm, the same as on the AF 85mm F1.8 P FE. Samyang builds it from its own high-strength engineering plastic, drops the red ring of earlier lenses and supplies a redesigned hood.
Where it fits
Within our database, the Sony FE 16mm F1.8 G weighs 304 g and the Viltrox AF 16mm F1.8 550 g, both more than one stop faster. Samyang's own AF 18mm F2.8 FE is even lighter at 145 g but less wide, and the Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 FE is wider at 505 g. The 16mm P lens therefore competes on size and weight rather than on aperture.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very light at 207 g for a full frame 16 mm
- 12 cm minimum focus with 0.33x magnification
- AF/MF switch and USB-C port
- Dust protection tested in-house to an IP5-level standard
Cons
- F2.8 is slower than F1.8 competitors
- No optical stabilizer
- Seven aperture blades only
- Weather sealing is not a guarantee of dust or splash proofing, as Samyang notes
Verdict
The AF 16mm F2.8 P FE is a small, light wide prime with unusually close focusing. It suits hybrid creators and travelers who care more about weight and size than about a very bright aperture.
