Overview
The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is a medium telephoto macro lens for full frame Sony E-mount cameras. Sony announced it in September 2025 as part of the G Master series. It reaches a maximum magnification of 1.4x, beyond life size, and is meant for macro photographers as well as portrait and wedding shooters who want a stabilized 100 mm lens.
Optical design
The lens has 17 elements in 13 groups. According to Sony, two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and two ED elements deliver resolution from the center to the edge and reduce chromatic and other aberrations. Nano AR Coating II covers the whole lens surface to limit flare and ghosting in backlit scenes, and an 11 blade circular diaphragm shapes out-of-focus highlights. The aperture runs from F2.8 to F22. Minimum focus distance is 26 cm, which gives the 1.4x maximum magnification. With the SEL20TC teleconverter Sony quotes up to 2.8x, and the SEL14TC is supported as well.
Autofocus and handling
Four XD linear motors drive the focus group. Sony says autofocus is up to 1.9 times faster than on previous models, measured against the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS. Three controls are aimed at macro work: a full-time DMF switch that allows manual correction by turning the focus ring during autofocus, a focus mode switch, and a sliding focus ring that engages a full manual mode linked to the distance and magnification scales. A dedicated aperture ring gives direct control of the iris. The built-in Optical SteadyShot is tuned for close-ups and, according to Sony, compensates angular shake, shift shake (up, down, left, right) and front-to-back shake.
Build and size
The lens weighs 646 g, measures 81.4 mm in diameter and 147.9 mm in length, and takes 67 mm filters. Sony describes a weather-sealed design with silicone gaskets and a fluorine-coated front element, with the usual note that it is not guaranteed to be fully dust and moisture proof. A bayonet hood (ALC-SH173) and a soft case are included.
Where it fits
Within Sony's own system, the closest relative is the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS, which Sony uses as the speed reference. The FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS has the same focal length but is a smooth-transition portrait lens, not a macro lens. Third-party options for E-mount include the Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro and the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di III Macro VXD.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 1.4x maximum magnification, more than the usual 1:1
- Built-in stabilizer designed for close-up work
- Four XD linear motors and a sliding focus ring for AF and manual focus
- Aperture ring and 11 blade circular diaphragm
Cons
- Larger and heavier than the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS (646 g and 147.9 mm versus 602 g and 131 mm in the database)
- G Master positioning, so it sits in the upper price class
- Only dust and moisture resistant according to Sony, not fully sealed
Verdict
For Sony shooters who want more than 1:1 and a stabilized 100 mm in one lens, this is the most ambitious macro option in the native lineup. It trades size and cost for magnification and handling. If life size is enough, lighter alternatives exist.
