Overview
The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GM is a large aperture telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount full frame cameras. Sony announced it in April 2025 as the first telephoto zoom with a maximum focal length of 150 mm and a constant F2 aperture. It targets portrait, wedding, event and indoor sports photographers, and video shooters who want a single lens in place of several fast primes.
Optical design
The lens has 19 elements in 17 groups. Sony lists two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED and three ED elements, plus Nano AR Coating II against flare and ghosting. An 11 blade circular aperture shapes the bokeh. A floating focusing system allows a minimum focus distance of 40 cm at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.20x. The aperture runs from F2 to F22.
Autofocus and handling
Four XD linear motors drive focusing. Sony says the lens works with the Alpha 9 III at up to 120 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, minimizes focus breathing and supports breathing compensation on selected bodies. It has Linear Response MF. The zoom is internal, so length and weight balance stay constant, which helps on gimbals. Teleconverters are not compatible. There is no stabilizer.
Build and size
The lens weighs 1,340 g without the tripod mount, measures 102.8 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length and takes 95 mm filters. Sony describes a dust and moisture resistant design (not guaranteed fully sealed) and a fluorine front coating.
Where it fits
Sony markets it as covering what a 50 mm, 85 mm and 135 mm set would. For lighter gear, the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II and the Sony FE 28-70mm F2 GM cover neighbouring ranges. Primes such as the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II and Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM trade flexibility for size.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Constant F2 across 50 to 150 mm
- Internal zoom with stable balance
- Four XD linear motors, reduced focus breathing
- Dust and moisture resistant design
Cons
- 1,340 g and a 95 mm filter size
- No lens stabilization, no teleconverter support
- Top price tier
Verdict
The FE 50-150mm F2 GM is a specialist tool: unusual in its combination of range and aperture, and sensibly built for fast AF and video. It fits professionals who value one-lens flexibility, while casual users will find lighter F2.8 or F4 options more practical.
