Overview

The Venus Laowa 15mm F4.5 0.5X Wide Angle Macro is a compact manual focus wide angle prime with half life size macro capability for full frame cameras. Laowa lists it for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Canon EF, Nikon F and Leica L mounts, and the lens first appeared in May 2025. It is aimed at landscape, architecture and close-up shooters who want a very wide 110.5 degree view and the option to move in close on foreground subjects.

Optical design

The lens has 16 elements in 11 groups. According to Laowa, these include 2 aspherical, 3 high refractive index and 3 ED elements, used to keep distortion and colour fringing under control. The maximum magnification is 1:2, reached at the minimum focus distance of 129 mm measured from the sensor. The spec sheet gives a working distance of 36 mm at that setting. The aperture runs from f/4.5 to f/32 with 5 blades, which Laowa uses to promote a ten point sunstar.

Focusing and handling

Focusing is manual on every mount. What differs is the aperture control: Laowa states that the Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF versions carry an electronic chip with auto aperture, so the aperture is set on the camera and recorded in the EXIF data. The Nikon F, Canon RF and L mount versions use a manual aperture. The lens has no stabilizer of its own.

Build and size

The manufacturer quotes 308 g and 47.7 mm in length with a diameter of 70 mm, as a single value for all mounts on the product page. Real weights and lengths can differ slightly between mounts, because the mount parts change the body, but Laowa does not list separate figures. The front takes 62 mm screw in filters, and a detachable lens hood is part of the package according to Laowa.

Where it fits

Laowa already offers the Venus Laowa 15mm F4 1:1 Macro, which reaches life size magnification but is a different and larger design. The newer lens gives up some magnification for a smaller and lighter body. For ultra wide shooting without the macro angle, the Venus Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D and the Venus Laowa 15mm F2 Zero-D are alternatives in the same system.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Light at 308 g with a 62 mm filter thread
  • 110.5 degree angle of view and 1:2 macro in one lens
  • Close focus of 129 mm allows wide angle close ups with background context
  • Auto aperture with EXIF data on Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF
  • Offered for six different mounts

Cons

  • Manual focus only
  • A maximum aperture of f/4.5 is modest for an ultra wide prime
  • Manual aperture on Nikon F, Canon RF and L mount
  • Magnification stops at 1:2 and does not reach life size
  • No stabilizer, so low light work depends on the camera body

Verdict

The Venus Laowa 15mm F4.5 0.5X Wide Angle Macro suits photographers who want a small, light ultra wide lens that can also focus very close. The data points to a travel and landscape tool with a macro option rather than a dedicated macro lens. Those who need life size magnification should look at the older 15mm F4 1:1 Macro instead.
