Overview
The ZEISS Otus ML 1.4/85 is a manual focus portrait lens for full frame mirrorless cameras with Sony E, Canon RF or Nikon Z mount. ZEISS unveiled it on 25 February 2025 together with the 1.4/50 and describes it as optimized for portrait work. It is the telephoto member of the Otus ML family, which continues the Otus line for mirrorless systems.
Optical design
The lens has 15 elements in 11 groups. In contrast to the 1.4/35 and 1.4/50, ZEISS lists a Sonnar design here, again with an aspherical surface and a lens made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. The press release describes an apochromatic design that minimizes chromatic aberration. The T* coating reduces reflections and flare. The aperture runs from f/1.4 to f/16 with ten blades. The minimum focus distance is 80 cm at an image ratio of 1:8.1, and the diagonal angle of view is 30 degrees.
Focusing and handling
There is no autofocus and no image stabilization. The metal focus ring has a helicoid mechanism and a rotation angle of 244 degrees. The aperture ring can be de-clicked for video use, and the scales are marked clearly in yellow. ZEISS presents manual focusing as a way to place the focus precisely on the subject.
Build and size
The all-metal lens weighs 1033 g in E-mount, 1055 g in RF-mount and 1061 g in Z-mount. Length without caps is 113 mm for E, 111 mm for RF and 116 mm for Z. The maximum diameter is 88 mm and the filter thread is M77 x 0.75, larger than the M67 thread of the 35 and 50 mm lenses.
Where it fits
The DSLR Otus 85mm F1.4 in our database weighs 1140 g and is 138 mm long. For E-mount, the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II weighs 642 g, the Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8 weighs 475 g and has stabilization, and the Sony FE 85mm F1.8 weighs 371 g. On Canon RF the Canon RF 85mm F1.4 L VCM weighs 636 g and the RF 85mm F1.2L USM 1195 g. On Nikon Z the Nikkor Z 85mm F1.2 S weighs 1160 g.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fast F1.4 with ten aperture blades
- All-metal build with a helicoid focus ring
- De-clickable aperture ring for video
- Lighter than the DSLR Otus 85mm
- Available for E, RF and Z
Cons
- Manual focus only, which is demanding at F1.4 with moving subjects
- Over 1 kg and clearly heavier than autofocus 85 mm F1.4 lenses
- No image stabilization
- Minimum focus of 80 cm
Verdict
The Otus ML 1.4/85 is a heavy but mechanically refined portrait lens for photographers who focus manually by choice. Autofocus 85 mm lenses are much lighter, so the choice comes down to how much the focusing experience matters.
