What was announced
On October 8, 2026, Tamron announced the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062) for Nikon Z, a fast standard zoom for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It launches on October 22, 2026[1]. The lens already exists for Sony E, where it has been available since October 27, 2022[2]. The European release states no price.
Key specs
The zoom offers 20 to 40 mm with a constant F2.8 aperture. On APS-C cameras that equals 30 to 60 mm in 35mm terms, according to Tamron[1]. The design has 12 elements in 11 groups, including four LD elements and two glass-molded aspherical elements, and the aperture has nine blades. Minimum focusing distance is 0.17 m (20 mm) to 0.29 m (40 mm), and maximum magnification is 1:3.8 to 1:5.1. The filter thread measures 67 mm. The Nikon Z version is 88.7 mm long and weighs 380 g; the Sony E version measures 86.5 mm and 365 g[2].
Autofocus and features
Focus is driven by the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. Tamron emphasizes video and vlogging, in part because the low weight keeps the lens balanced on camera grips or compact gimbals. The construction is moisture-resistant, the front element has a fluorine coating, and the zoom ring turns only 65 degrees. For Nikon Z, Tamron lists hybrid AF, eye AF, M/A mode and in-camera lens correction; which functions are available depends on the camera. The lens is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility app[3].
