Overview
The Canon RF 85mm F1.4L VCM is a portrait prime for full-frame RF cameras and part of Canon's hybrid L-series primes for photo and video. Canon announced it in September 2025. It is built around a Voice Coil Motor for focusing and has a dedicated iris ring, which makes it a lens for people who shoot stills and video with the same optics.
Optical design
According to Canon, the lens has 14 elements in 10 groups with one UD element and one aspherical element. The aperture ranges from f/1.4 to f/16, and the diaphragm has 11 blades in a circular shape, which Canon describes as made for cinematic bokeh and highlights. Super Spectra Coating and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) are used against ghosting and flare, and Canon also names an oil-repellent fluorine coating. Canon states minimal focus breathing. Maximum magnification is 0.12x.
Autofocus and handling
Focusing uses a Voice Coil Motor (VCM), which Canon describes as smooth, silent and very responsive. The minimum focus distance is 0.75 m. A smooth-action iris ring allows manual control of the aperture, which is useful for video work. The lens has no optical stabilizer; stabilization depends on the camera body.
Build and size
The lens weighs 636 g and measures 76.5 mm in diameter and 99.3 mm in length. The filter thread is 67 mm. Canon describes an L-series build with well-placed weather seals and says the lens is about half the size and weight of the RF 85mm F1.2L USM.
Where it fits
The RF 85mm F1.2L USM is the faster alternative at f/1.2, but it weighs 1195 g and takes 82 mm filters in our database. The RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is the lighter option at 500 g, with a stabilizer and a maximum aperture of f/2. Within the same VCM family, the RF 50mm F1.4 L VCM and RF 24mm F1.4 L VCM share the 67 mm filter size, which helps if you carry several of them. The new lens does not replace the 85mm F1.2 but offers a smaller alternative to it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 636 g, about half the weight of the RF 85mm F1.2L USM according to Canon
- f/1.4 aperture with 11 aperture blades
- Voice Coil Motor focusing with minimal focus breathing
- Iris ring for manual aperture control
- Weather seals and fluorine coating
- Same 67 mm filter size as other VCM primes
Cons
- No built-in stabilizer
- One stop slower than the RF 85mm F1.2L USM
- Only 0.12x magnification and 0.75 m minimum focus distance
Verdict
The RF 85mm F1.4L VCM is aimed at portrait and hybrid shooters who want an L-series 85 mm without the size of the f/1.2 version. It trades one stop of aperture for a much lighter body, and adds an iris ring and VCM autofocus designed for video.
