Successor: Vistilen AF 85mm F1.4 II
Overview
The Vistilen AF 85mm F1.4 is a full-frame portrait lens with autofocus for Canon RF bodies. Vistilen calls the mount EFR and lists Canon EOS R cameras as compatible. It is the larger and faster of the brand's two 85mm lenses and was launched in June 2026. According to Vistilen, the F1.4 aperture is meant to melt the background and keep the subject sharp.
Optical design
Vistilen specifies 13 elements in 8 groups, including low-dispersion and high-refractive-index glass, and says that this achieves high resolution and natural color. The diaphragm has 11 blades and closes to F16. The minimum focus distance is 0.98 m, which is long for a portrait lens. On APS-C bodies the angle of view corresponds to about 136mm.
Autofocus and handling
An STM stepping motor drives the focusing, and Vistilen says it is almost silent and suited to portraits and video. Metal contacts on the lens base pass on EXIF data and control the aperture electronically, and an AF/MF switch selects the focus mode. The product page shows no aperture ring. A lens coating is described as reducing stray light and glare in backlit scenes.
Build and size
The filter thread is 77 mm. The lens measures 87 mm in diameter and 114 mm in length and weighs 735 g according to the data sheet image. That is clearly heavier than the Vistilen AF 85mm F1.8 SE II at about 379 g.
Where it fits
On RF the closest native lens is the Canon RF 85mm F1.4 L VCM, and the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 RF is an autofocus alternative with the same aperture. The Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is smaller and adds stabilization. The Vistilen AF 85mm F1.4 II is a revised version with a different optical construction and lower weight.
Pros and cons
Pros
- F1.4 maximum aperture with 11 aperture blades
- Low-dispersion and high-refractive-index glass, according to Vistilen
- Electronic aperture control and EXIF transfer through metal contacts
- AF/MF switch on the barrel
Cons
- Heavy for the focal length at 735 g
- Minimum focus distance of 0.98 m
- No image stabilization in the lens
- Joined in the shop lineup by the AF 85mm F1.4 II, which is lighter and focuses closer
Verdict
The AF 85mm F1.4 is the first Vistilen 85mm with an F1.4 aperture and gives RF users a further autofocus option for large-aperture portraits. The long minimum focus distance and the weight are its main drawbacks, which the later II version addresses.
