Overview
The Tokina atx-m 11-18mm F2.8 is an ultra-wide zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras with a constant F2.8 aperture. The version covered here is the Fujifilm X version (Tokina name: atx-m 11-18mm F2.8 X), and a Sony E version also exists. According to Tokina it is the first super wide-angle zoom in its range designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras. The 11-18mm range corresponds to about 17-27mm in 35mm terms.
Optical design
Tokina specifies 13 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical and two super low-dispersion elements that suppress chromatic aberrations. The rounded diaphragm has 9 blades and the minimum aperture is F22. The angle of view is 104.3 to 76.7 degrees. Minimum focusing distance is 19 cm, with a maximum magnification of 1:9.2. Tokina says the short minimum focusing distance allows perspective effects in wide-angle shots. The filter thread measures 67mm, and the lens carries multi-coating.
Autofocus and handling
A stepping motor (ST-M) drives the autofocus, and Tokina states full compatibility with Fujifilm camera functions: AF plus MF, MF Assist, Eye Detection, optical corrections and image stabilization via the camera body. The lens has no stabilizer of its own. A manual focus ring and a Micro USB port (Type B) for firmware updates are listed. The hood is the BH-674.
Build and size
The lens weighs 320 g according to Tokina's product page and measures 74.4mm in diameter and 74.4mm in length. Tokina describes it as compact and lightweight for travel and gimbal use, aimed at hybrid shooters of stills and video. Tokina gives no information about weather sealing in the sources checked.
Where it fits
On Fujifilm X, the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR is stabilized and weather resistant but one stop slower. The Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN and the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD are other constant-F2.8 ultra-wide zooms available for Fujifilm X, and the Carl Zeiss Touit 2.8/12 is a prime alternative.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Constant F2.8 from 11mm to 18mm
- 320 g and a compact size
- Close focusing at 19 cm
- Full compatibility with Fujifilm functions per Tokina
Cons
- No weather sealing stated
- Relies on the camera's stabilization
- 18mm long end, 10mm competitors go wider
- Quality claims come from Tokina, independent measurements are still needed
Verdict
A compact, fast ultra-wide zoom for Fujifilm APS-C users who want constant F2.8. It is worth comparing with the Sigma and Tamron alternatives on size and price before choosing.
