Kase AF 24mm F3.8 Pancake

The Kase AF 24mm F3.8 Pancake is an ultra-thin autofocus wide-angle prime for full frame Sony E-mount cameras. Kase quotes a weight of only 60 g and a thickness of 16.8 mm, which puts it among the smallest autofocus lenses for the system. It is currently offered for Sony E only, with Nikon Z and Fujifilm X versions expected to follow later.

Optical design

The optical design has 6 elements in 6 groups, according to the manufacturer. The maximum aperture is f/3.8, which is modest for a 24 mm prime but typical for a pancake design that trades light gathering for size. The closest focus distance is 0.3 m with a maximum magnification of 0.1x. The format is full frame.

Autofocus and handling

Autofocus is driven by a VCM (voice coil) motor, which supports Eye AF and subject tracking on compatible Sony cameras. The lens has a built-in flip cap on the front, so no separate lens cap is needed. There is no image stabilization in the lens. The tiny size suits a mirrorless body that is carried all day.

Build and size

The lens weighs 60 g and is 16.8 mm thick.

Where it fits

For Sony E, the 7artisans AF 24mm F1.8 offers a brighter maximum aperture and autofocus, though in a larger body, and the 7artisans Photoelectric 35mm f/5.6 Pancake is a manual alternative with a different focal length. The Kase's advantage is the combination of 24 mm, autofocus and almost no weight. It fits photographers who prioritise carrying size over aperture.

Verdict

The Kase AF 24mm F3.8 Pancake is a travel and street lens for Sony full frame users who want the smallest possible wide-angle kit. The slow aperture is the compromise for its size and weight.
