Overview
The Viltrox AF 26mm F2.8 EVO is a full-frame pancake prime with autofocus for Sony E and Nikon Z mount. At about 130 g and 23.8 mm long on E mount it is a very small autofocus full-frame lens, and it targets street, travel and everyday shooting. Viltrox introduced it in July 2026.
Optical design
Viltrox lists 8 elements in 6 groups, with 1 HR element and 2 aspherical elements. According to Viltrox, the HR element helps control overall size and the aspherical elements reduce the number of conventional elements needed while keeping rendering sharp from F2.8. The diaphragm has 7 blades and closes to F16. The angle of view is 81.2 degrees, and the minimum focus distance is a short 0.2 m with a maximum magnification of 0.2x, which allows close-up detail shots.
Autofocus and handling
For the first time Viltrox uses a gear-type stepping motor here, chosen for its small footprint, with full-group focusing. Viltrox notes that a subtle vibration and faint noise from the gears can be normal and that moderate focus transitions suit video better than large, rapid focus pulls. The lens keeps two real control rings despite its thin body: a dedicated clicked aperture ring and a separate focus ring. A USB-C port handles firmware updates, and the mount is rubber sealed.
Build and size
The barrel is all metal. The E-mount version weighs about 130 g with a diameter of 66 mm and a length of 23.8 mm. The Z-mount version weighs about 170 g, measures 69.4 mm in diameter and 25.8 mm in length. The filter thread is only 43 mm, and Viltrox lists a magnetic lens cap among its features.
Where it fits
In the Viltrox range, the AF 26mm F2.8 EVO is the pancake option and complements the 35mm and 55mm EVO primes. On Nikon Z, the Nikon Nikkor Z 26mm F2.8 is the direct competitor with the same focal length and aperture. On Sony E, the Sony FE 24mm F2.8 G and the Sony FE 28mm F2 are the nearest alternatives in focal length, and the Tamron 24mm F2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 and Samyang AF 24mm F2.8 FE add further wide-angle options.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very small and light at 130 to 170 g
- Two real control rings in a pancake body
- 0.2 m minimum focus distance
- Rubber-sealed mount and all-metal build
Cons
- F2.8 is modest for low light
- Gear-type focus motor can be audible and is less suited to rapid focus pulls in video
- No image stabilization in the lens
- Only 7 aperture blades
Verdict
The AF 26mm F2.8 EVO is made for photographers who prioritize portability and want real controls on a very slim full-frame lens. It is not a low-light lens, but it fits easily in a coat pocket.
