Overview
The Samyang AF 24-60mm F2.8 FE is a compact standard zoom with constant F2.8 aperture for Sony E-mount full frame cameras. Samyang unveiled it on 12 September 2025 at IBC in Amsterdam as the second zoom co-developed with the German optics company Schneider-Kreuznach, after the AF 14-24mm F2.8 FE. It is aimed at photographers and hybrid creators who want a small F2.8 zoom for travel, lifestyle, portraits and video.
Optical design
The lens has 14 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical (ASP), three high refractive (HR) and two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, with UMC coating. Samyang says the aspherical elements keep distortion low and sharpness consistent in low light. The aperture runs from F2.8 to F22 with a nine-blade diaphragm. The minimum focus distance is 18 cm at 24 mm and 32 cm at 60 mm, with magnifications of 0.27x and 0.25x. The angle of view is 84.1 degrees at the wide end and 39.6 degrees at the tele end on full frame.
Autofocus and handling
A Linear STM stepping motor drives autofocus for stills and video. The lens has a focus ring, a zoom ring, a programmable custom button, an AF/MF switch and a USB-C port for firmware updates. There is no optical stabilizer. The 72 mm filter thread accepts polarizers and ND filters, according to Samyang.
Build and size
The lens weighs 494 g and has a maximum diameter of 78 mm. It is 102 mm long at 24 mm and extends to 126 mm at 60 mm. Samyang describes a high-strength aluminum barrel, a Hydro Shield coating that repels water and oil, and IP5-level dust resistance. In the US the lens is sold in a Rokinon-branded version, which Samyang says is identical in specifications.
Where it fits
Within our database, the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G weighs 440 g and the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary 470 g, both covering shorter ranges. The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 weighs 540 g for E-mount, the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II 695 g, and Samyang's older AF 24-70mm F2.8 1027 g. The 24-60 mm sits close to the light end of the F2.8 standard zooms while reaching 24 mm at the wide side.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Constant F2.8 at 494 g
- 24 mm wide end with 18 cm minimum focus
- Programmable button, AF/MF switch and USB-C port
- Hydro Shield coating and dust resistance
Cons
- 60 mm reach is shorter than the 70 mm or 75 mm of rivals
- No optical stabilizer
- Length grows by 24 mm when zoomed in
- Only available for Sony E-mount so far
Verdict
The AF 24-60mm F2.8 FE trades some telephoto reach for light weight and a 24 mm wide end. It is a sensible walkaround zoom for E-mount shooters who want F2.8 without a heavy lens.
