Overview
The Sony FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS is a super telephoto prime for full frame Sony E-mount cameras. Sony announced it in September 2026 together with the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS. According to Sony, it is the lightest lens in its class, defined as 600 mm lenses with a maximum aperture of F6.3 or faster. It is aimed at birds, wildlife and sports photographers who shoot handheld.
Optical design
The lens has 24 elements in 17 groups. Sony names three Super ED elements and one ED element to suppress chromatic aberration at this focal length and to keep resolution high up to the edges. Nano AR Coating II reduces ghosting and flare in backlit scenes, and an 11 blade circular diaphragm with controlled spherical aberration shapes the bokeh. The aperture runs from F6.3 to F32. Minimum focus distance is 2.5 m and maximum magnification is 0.25x.
Autofocus and handling
Two XD linear motors and a control algorithm tuned for these lenses drive autofocus. Sony states that the lens is fully compatible with the 120 fps continuous shooting of the Alpha 9 III with AF/AE tracking. Built-in optical stabilization supports Active Mode and coordinated stabilization on compatible bodies, and breathing compensation is supported. Four customizable focus hold buttons surround the barrel, and Sony lists a function ring, focus range limiter, full-time DMF switch, focus mode switch and stabilization mode switch.
Build and size
The lens weighs about 995 g without the tripod mount, measures 108 mm in diameter and 263 mm in length and takes 95 mm filters. Sony says the weight balance moves the center of gravity closer to the camera body, which helps holding the framing and panning. A dust and moisture resistant design and a fluorine front coating are described, not guaranteed to be fully proof. With the 2x teleconverter SEL20TC the focal length reaches 1,200 mm, and the SEL14TC is supported as well.
Where it fits
The FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS is a zoom that reaches the same focal length at a similar aperture but with a much larger 2,115 g body, while the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS reaches further. The FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is much brighter and in a different size and price class. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS is the shorter sibling of the same weight and diameter.
Pros and cons
Pros
- About 995 g for a 600 mm lens, far lighter than F4 or zoom alternatives
- Center of gravity near the camera body
- Built-in stabilizer and fast dual XD motor AF
- 1,200 mm with the 2x teleconverter
Cons
- Fixed focal length, no zoom
- F6.3 aperture is slower than the 400 mm sibling
- Minimum focus distance of 2.5 m
Verdict
The FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS brings 600 mm to handheld use at a weight that Sony claims no other lens in this class matches. It suits bird and wildlife shooters who value reach and carrying comfort and can accept a fixed focal length.
