Predecessor: Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III RXD
Overview
The Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075) is an all-in-one zoom for Sony E full-frame mirrorless cameras with an 8x zoom range. It is the second-generation successor to the Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (Model A071). According to Tamron, it keeps the compact size, widens the short end from 28mm to 25mm, keeps 200mm at the long end and adds faster, more precise autofocus. It is meant for travel and everyday use.
Optical design
Tamron lists 18 elements in 14 groups, with LD (Low Dispersion), XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements. The circular diaphragm has 9 blades and stays almost perfectly circular up to two stops down from maximum aperture, according to Tamron. Maximum aperture runs from F2.8 to F5.6, and the minimum aperture is F16-32. The angle of view is 81 degrees 44 minutes to 12 degrees 21 minutes. Minimum focusing distance is 16 cm at the wide end and 80 cm at the long end, with maximum magnification of 1:1.9 and 1:3.9, which Tamron calls half-macro capable.
Autofocus and handling
The VXD linear motor (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) handles autofocus. Tamron highlights it for sports and pets in motion. The lens works with the Tamron Lens Utility software for customization. A zoom lock switch prevents barrel extension under its own weight while carrying. Tamron lists a refined exterior surface and smoother zoom and focus rings. The tables list no vibration compensation, so shake reduction depends on the camera body.
Build and size
The lens weighs 575 g, is 76.2mm in diameter and 121.5mm long, and takes 67mm filters, the same size Tamron uses across several of its recent lenses. The barrel has moisture-resistant construction, leak-resistant seals throughout, and a fluorine coating that repels water and oil. A flower-shaped hood, front cap and rear cap are included.
Where it fits
The predecessor is the Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. Other all-in-one options on Sony E include the Tamron 28-300mm F4-7.1 Di III VC VXD, the Sigma 20-200mm F3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary and the Sony FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS. Standard zooms with constant F2.8 such as the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 cover less range.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 25mm to 200mm range with F2.8 at the wide end
- Close focusing with 1:1.9 magnification at 25mm
- VXD autofocus and moisture-resistant construction
- 575 g for an 8x zoom
Cons
- Aperture drops to F5.6 at 200mm
- No vibration compensation listed
- Only available for Sony E
- Quality claims come from Tamron, independent measurements are still needed
Verdict
A compact all-in-one zoom that improves on the 28-200mm in range, autofocus and close focusing. It suits Sony E users who want one lens for travel, as long as they accept the slower aperture at the long end.
