Overview
The Fujifilm XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR is a super-telephoto prime for Fujifilm X mount cameras with an APS-C sensor. Fujifilm announced it in September 2026. The focal length equals about 609 mm on full frame, and Fujifilm positions it as the lens with the highest optical performance in the XF lineup. It is aimed at wildlife, bird, motorsport and aviation photographers who shoot handheld at long range.
Optical design
The lens has 21 elements in 14 groups, including four ED elements and two Super ED elements. The front element has a fluorine coating. The diaphragm has 9 rounded blades and closes down to f/22.
Autofocus and handling
A high-speed linear motor drives autofocus with an inner focus system. Fujifilm quotes up to 5.5 stops of optical image stabilization, measured to CIPA standards for pitch and yaw. A focus range selector limits the drive range, and Fujifilm says this reduces drive time for subjects at five meters or farther. There is also a Focus Preset function that recalls a stored distance with the SET button, and a Focus Control Button near the front of the barrel that can be assigned AF-L, PRESET or AF through the Focus Selector Switch. The minimum focus distance is 2.75 m with a maximum magnification of 0.16x.
Build and size
The lens weighs 1,245 g without caps and hood, measures about 104.5 mm in diameter and 239.5 mm in length, and takes 95 mm filters. Fujifilm says it is sealed in 20 places to be dust-resistant, weather-resistant and usable down to -10 degrees Celsius.
Where it fits
With the XF 1.4X TC WR and XF 2X TC WR teleconverters it reaches 560 mm and 800 mm, or 853 mm and 1,219 mm in full frame terms, according to Fujifilm. In our database the closest siblings are the Fujifilm XF 500mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR at 1,335 g, the Fujifilm XF 200mm F2 R LM OIS WR and the zooms Fujifilm XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR and Fujifilm XF 150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR. Fujifilm says the 400 mm completes its range of large-aperture super-telephoto XF primes.
Pros and cons
Pros
- f/4.5 maximum aperture at 400 mm
- Up to 5.5 stops of stabilization, according to Fujifilm
- Weather-sealed in 20 places
- Focus limiter, focus preset and focus control button
- Compatible with the XF 1.4X and 2X teleconverters
Cons
- Heavy at 1,245 g and long at 239.5 mm
- Minimum focus distance of 2.75 m
- 95 mm filter thread is costly
- Fixed focal length, no zoom flexibility
Verdict
A top-end prime for X system users who need long reach with a bright aperture and good handling. Compared with the 500 mm f/5.6, it trades some reach for a wider aperture and a lower weight.
