Overview
The Venus Laowa 200mm F2 AF FF is a full frame autofocus telephoto prime with an f/2 maximum aperture, sold under Laowa's C-Dreamer line. It was announced in October 2025 for Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF. Laowa positions it as an accessible route to a 200 mm f/2 lens, aimed at portrait, sports, wildlife and event shooters who want a thin depth of field and strong subject separation.
Optical design
The lens has 11 elements in 9 groups and 9 aperture blades, with an aperture range of f/2 to f/22 and a 12 degree angle of view. Laowa says the design minimizes chromatic aberration for clean edges in high contrast scenes. The minimum focus distance is 1.5 m with a maximum magnification of 0.15x. The specifications list no optical stabilizer, so camera stabilization or support has to do the work.
Autofocus and handling
Autofocus is the main feature, and a mode switch toggles between AF and MF. A focus range switch offers Full or 5 m to infinity, which Laowa says speeds up tracking of distant subjects. A function button can be assigned to settings such as ISO, white balance, AF mode or drive mode, and PetaPixel counts five customizable buttons on the barrel. Laowa also notes that the lens may not support 15 frames per second with continuous AF on Sony bodies. The Canon EF version can be used on Canon RF cameras with an adapter, but Laowa says AF compatibility depends on the camera and adapter.
Build and size
Laowa lists about 1588 g and a front diameter of 118 mm. Length is 148.3 mm for Canon EF, 174.8 mm for Sony E and 176.8 mm for Nikon Z. The front filter size is 105 mm, and the Sony E and Nikon Z versions also have a 43 mm rear filter holder that accepts filters under 1.5 mm thick, which Laowa presents as a cheaper way to use ND filters. A built-in lens support with Arca-Swiss compatibility is included, and PetaPixel describes the build as weather sealed.
Where it fits
Among fast 200 mm lenses in the database, the Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM and the Sigma 200mm F2 DG OS Sports are the direct comparisons: the Canon is an EF DSLR design with stabilization, and the Sigma is built for Sony E and Leica L. Laowa markets the Venus Laowa 200mm F2 AF FF as a lightweight and affordable full frame telephoto, and according to PetaPixel it is only the second 200 mm f/2 prime for full frame mirrorless cameras.
Pros and cons
Pros
- f/2 at 200 mm for shallow depth of field
- Autofocus with a focus range switch
- Arca-Swiss lens support built in
- Rear filter holder on Sony E and Nikon Z versions
- Three mounts, including Canon EF for adapted use on RF
Cons
- About 1588 g is heavy for handheld use
- No stabilizer in the specifications
- 105 mm front filters are large, and Laowa itself calls them bulky
- Minimum focus distance of 1.5 m
- May not reach 15 fps with continuous AF on Sony bodies, per Laowa
Verdict
The Venus Laowa 200mm F2 AF FF brings a rare focal length and aperture combination to three mounts with autofocus. It suits shooters who value separation over lightness and who have stabilized bodies or a tripod at hand.
