Overview
The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-105mm F4-7.1 is a light all-round zoom for Nikon Z mount cameras with a full frame sensor. Nikon announced it in January 2026. The aperture runs from f/4 at 24 mm to f/7.1 at the long end, and the lens targets travel, landscape and everyday photography where low weight matters more than speed.
Optical design
The lens has 12 elements in 10 groups, including one ED element and two aspherical elements. The diaphragm has 7 rounded blades and closes down to f/22-40, depending on the focal length. The angle of view is 84 degrees at 24 mm on full frame, and Nikon lists a minimum focus distance of 0.2 m at 24 and 50 mm and 0.28 m at 105 mm. The maximum reproduction ratio is 0.5x at 70 to 105 mm.
Autofocus and handling
A stepping motor (STM) drives autofocus, which Nikon says is fast and quiet and suited to video. A control ring can be set to focus (M/A), aperture, exposure compensation or ISO. On compatible bodies such as the Z9, Z8, Z6III, Z5II, Zf, Z50II and ZR, Nikon says Hi-Res Zoom extends the range to up to the equivalent of 210 mm without a loss of resolution. The lens has no stabilizer, so stabilization depends on the camera body.
Build and size
At about 350 g, 73.5 mm in diameter and 106.5 mm in length from the mount flange, the lens is compact for its range. The filter thread is 67 mm. Nikon says it was designed with dust and drip resistance in mind, without guaranteeing it in every situation.
Where it fits
Within the Z system it is a lighter, slower alternative to the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S, which keeps f/4 throughout. For more reach there is the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-200mm F4-6.3 VR with a stabilizer. A shorter and lighter option is the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-50mm F4-6.3. Photographers who want a brighter standard zoom can look at the Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S or the Nikon Nikkor Z 28-75mm F2.8.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 24 to 105 mm in a light 350 g body
- Close focus down to 0.2 m with 0.5x magnification
- Quiet STM autofocus
- Assignable control ring
- Hi-Res Zoom on suitable bodies
Cons
- Aperture of f/7.1 at 105 mm limits low-light use
- No lens stabilizer
- 7-blade diaphragm
- Dust and drip resistance is not guaranteed in all conditions, per Nikon
Verdict
A travel zoom for people who want the 105 mm reach without the weight of a constant-aperture lens. The trade-off is the slow maximum aperture at the long end.
